February 7, 2023 – This I Believe – The Forgiveness of Sins

Today we will continue looking at the Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Today’s passage is so key.  So key.  It’s something we need to take a moment to understand and ponder.  Remember the Creeds give us the key, immovable doctrines of the church.  Essential Christianity.  Mere Christianity, to quote CS Lewis.  The most important doctrines of our church.

Virgin birth.  Resurrection.  Trinity. All these things.

What is among them?  The forgiveness of sins.  We believe in the forgiveness of sins.  Listen to that again.  Among all the things that we believe are essential to our faith is the forgiveness of sins.

Through Jesus, you are forgiven. That is an essential to our faith as the resurrection.  You are forgiven.  You can be forgiven.  You are forgiven.

The past is the past.  Forgiveness comes.  You don’t have to hold onto the past. It is gone. You are new.  You are forgiven.  We believe in the forgiveness of sins.

That is not just a thought or a wish; it is an essential doctrine of the Christian faith. It is in our very Creeds.  We believe in the forgiveness of sins.

You are forgiven.  Believe that truth. It’s in our Creed.  It’s who we are.

You are forgiven.
