This week’s reflections are written by Rev. Brian Johnson, one of our Associate Pastors here at St. Matthew’s
Rooted 2019 – Week Thirteen Day Two
Today’s reading is Psalm 3
This Psalm is written by King David during a very troubling time in his life. His son Absalom has rebelled against him, taken Jerusalem, and slept with his concubines in public. In the face of turmoil, David writes this Psalm. He knows he needs the help of God in this situation. Only God can give the peace that David needs. His prayer shows that God gives grace and mercy to the helpless. David was totally helpless in this situation. What did he do? He surrendered himself to prayer. As the Psalm yesterday pointed out that we need to lean on God and not our own strength, today’s Psalm shows us God can help the helpless. He doesn’t only help those who help themselves. That there are times in our lives we find our self in a mess like David. We need to follow David’s lead, turn to God in prayer, and seek refuge in him.
