Reflections with Andy – The Lord is in His Holy Temple – Habakkuk 2

Habbakuk 2:20 is one of my favorite passages in all the bible. The Lord is in His holy temple. Let all the earth keep silent before Him. We bring our many concerns, our many worries, our many fears, all these things to God. God, as a loving Father, longs to hear our worries in the same way we, as parents, hear the worries of our children. But our Lord also reminds us of this. He is in His Holy Temple. Keep silent. Trust. Listen. Rest. God is God. He is in His temple. Trust in Him. Rest in Him. He knows, He sees. He understands. He is God, always, always. Trust in the Lord. All will be well.

Good morning. It’s good to be with you on this Wednesday morning as we continue our study in Habakkuk. Today is a pivotal chapter in the book. Yesterday, we heard Habakkuk’s complaints to the Lord. He questioned why the wicked seemed to prosper, asking, “Are their horses not swifter than leopards? Are you even watching, God? Are you paying attention?” Today, we’ll see God’s response and Habakkuk’s reply.

In this chapter, after Habakkuk’s cries in chapter one asking, “God, are you paying attention?” we see the Lord’s response. God says, “Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so that a runner may read it. For there is still a vision for the appointed time; it speaks of the end and does not lie. If it seems to tarry, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay.” God assures Habakkuk that He is not blind to the injustices and that there is a plan and a time for everything.

I particularly love verse 4: “Look at the proud! Their spirit is not right in them, but the righteous live by their faith.” This is a beautiful and true concept. Pride and arrogance distort the spirit, and much of life’s pain is caused by things not right in our spirit—whether it’s pride, sin, greed, hate, or any other vice. When something is wrong in our spirit, it affects how we live, and how we live affects our spirit. Pride can affect our spirit, and our spirit can affect our pride. When we see someone deep in sin, our first response should be to pray for them because there’s something not right causing that behavior.

Then the text goes on to describe the consequences of pride and greed: “Will not your own creditors rise and those who make you tremble wake up? Then you will be booty for them.” This passage highlights that the proud and greedy will face judgment. But in verse 14, there’s a promise: “But the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.” This is a beautiful contrast between God’s eternal glory and the futility of idols.

Idols, whether they are money, status, or anything else, cannot bear the weight of divinity. They will crush us because they are not God. Only God can bear that weight. If we make our success, our career, our finances, or our family our idols, they will ultimately fail us because they cannot fulfill the role of God. The Lord is in His holy temple, and we must trust Him.

In conclusion, let us remember to trust in God, who is in His holy temple. Don’t be afraid, don’t worry, don’t fret. The Lord has everything under control. Inhale, exhale, and trust in Him. Tomorrow, we’ll continue with chapter three of Habakkuk. Thank you for joining us today. Have a great day!
