Reflections with Andy – Luke 11: 33-36 – Inside Out

Jesus reminds us that our eyes reflect what’s happening inside our hearts—if we’re full of light, it will shine out, but if we’re full of darkness, that will show too. Just like a lamp isn’t meant to be hidden, the light of Christ in us is meant to be seen in our words, actions, and even the look in our eyes. We can’t fake what’s inside forever—bitterness, joy, peace, or love all eventually come through. The good news is that when Christ transforms our hearts, His light naturally shines out, like breathing does for the body. Today’s challenge is simple: check your light. If your spark feels dim, go back to Jesus and let His love fill you again, so that His light can shine through you.

Well, good morning! It’s good to be with you on this Tuesday as we keep walking through Luke’s Gospel together. I hope your week’s off to a good start. We had a great night at Bible study last night, and I’m looking forward to all that’s ahead today. You know, every day is full of potential. Every day God gives us is a gift—no telling what’s waiting on us. So whatever’s on your plate—meetings, appointments, errands—I hope it’s a good day for you.

Today we’re in Luke 11:33–36:

“No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but on the lampstand so that those who enter may see the light. Your eye is the lamp of your body. If your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but if it is not healthy, your body is full of darkness. Therefore consider whether the light in you is not darkness. If then your whole body is full of light, with no part of it in darkness, it will be as full of light as when a lamp gives you light with its rays.”

That’s some interesting language, isn’t it? I love what Jesus says in verse 34: “Your eye is the lamp of your body.” He’s saying your eyes tell on you. They show what’s really going on inside.

Now, I’ll admit—I’m old school. I like to look people in the eye. That’s a big deal to me. When I do Rooted, I even try to look straight at the camera so you feel like I’m looking you in the eye. Because your eyes reveal a lot.

I can’t help but think of the great theological work Star Wars—particularly Revenge of the Sith. Spoiler alert, in case you’ve somehow missed that one. When Anakin turns to the dark side, what happens? His eyes change. They turn that yellow, Sith color. It’s a way of showing the darkness has gotten inside him. Now I know that’s just a movie—but honestly, I’ve seen that in real life.

Years ago, I was ministering to someone who was in a really bad place—spiritually, emotionally, physically. Everything was dark. And when I looked into their eyes, I saw that darkness. I don’t know how else to explain it—it was just there. Some time passed, and I heard they’d had a real encounter with Jesus, that they’d given their life to Him. And when I saw them again? Completely different. Their eyes were full of light, full of joy. You could see the change.

That’s what Jesus is talking about here. The eyes are a window to what’s happening inside. And it’s not just the eyes. What’s going on in your heart shows up in your face, your posture, your words, your actions—it all flows out.

Think about it: if you’re bitter on the inside, eventually it’s going to show up in how you speak. If you’re filled with joy, people are going to feel it when they’re around you. We can’t fake what’s going on inside forever.

And this ties right into what we’ve been reading in Luke—Jesus has been saying over and over it’s not just about outward behavior. It’s about what’s happening in your heart. Because if the inside is dark, the outside is going to follow. But if the inside is light—if Christ has changed your heart—it’s going to shine out in everything you do.

I once heard Dr. Frank Pollard say, “Works are to the Christian as breathing is to the body. It just happens.” You don’t tell your lungs, “Okay, breathe now.” They just do it. Same with faith. If your heart has been changed by Jesus, the fruit is going to show up—whether it’s in your eyes, your words, your actions, your whole life.

So here’s the question today: how’s your light? Have you lost your spark? Have you lost that joy, that peace, that shine in your eyes? If so, maybe it’s time to go back to the heart—back to Jesus—because what’s happening inside will always show up outside.

May our eyes today be full of His light. May our hearts be anchored in His love. And may that light shine in everything we do.

Thanks for being with me this morning. We’ll pick back up tomorrow in Luke 11. Have a great day!
