Reflections with Andy – Burdens and Loads – Galatians 6: 1-10

Paul always ends each letter with some basic instructions. It always feels like Proverbs to me. Today, Paul tells us to carry our own burdens and bear each other’s loads. Which is it? Are we to take care of our own needs or the needs of others? How are we to handle this? We see both, but how exactly does that work?

Good morning! Today, we begin Galatians 6, our final chapter before transitioning to James next week. I may include a few Psalms later this week before we start James, as it complements Galatians’ focus on grace by emphasizing works.

Let’s read Galatians 6:1-10. Paul offers practical wisdom, reminding us that God is not mocked—we reap what we sow. If we live by the flesh, we reap destruction; if by the Spirit, we gain life. He encourages us to not grow weary in doing good and to work for the good of all, especially fellow believers.

I love how Paul balances personal responsibility with community support. Verse 2 tells us to bear one another’s burdens, yet verse 5 says each must carry their own load. The key is this: we take care of our responsibilities first so we can help others when they need it. Just like on an airplane, where you put on your own oxygen mask before assisting others, we must ensure our well-being to be in a position to serve.

We all face moments when we can’t carry our burdens alone. That’s when we rely on each other. Carry your own burdens today so you can help bear someone else’s tomorrow.

Tomorrow, we’ll finish Galatians with chapter 6:11-18. Have a great day!
