We see the story of Esther continuing to play out. Mordecai hears about a plot to assassinate the king, and he tells Esther, who in turn tells the king. He then has these two men impaled upon poles. This may not seem like a lot happening, but see that Mordecai is involved and doing good. He tells Esther, who then tells an irrational king. These steps don’t seem like that much, but in time, they will be the very steps that will help save God’s people. God is bringing all these little, seemingly insignificant things together. We will see how all these things play out. God will work it all for good in the coming chapters.

Good morning! It’s so good to be with you this Friday as we continue our journey through Esther. Today, we’re wrapping up chapter 2. This story is so fascinating because, while it moves quickly, every detail matters. Yesterday, we saw Esther becoming queen, relying on God and staying faithful. Today, we’ll see how Mordecai begins to play a bigger role in the unfolding story. Let’s dive in and read Esther 2:19-23.
“When the virgins were assembled a second time, Mordecai was sitting at the king’s gate. But Esther had kept secret her family background and nationality, just as Mordecai had told her to do, for she continued to follow Mordecai’s instructions as she had done when he was bringing her up.
During the time Mordecai was sitting at the king’s gate, Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king’s officers who guarded the doorway, became angry and conspired to assassinate King Xerxes. But Mordecai found out about the plot and told Queen Esther, who in turn reported it to the king, giving credit to Mordecai. When the report was investigated and found to be true, the two officials were impaled on poles. All this was recorded in the book of the annals in the presence of the king.”
So here we see Mordecai stepping into a significant role. He uncovers a plot to assassinate King Xerxes and reports it to Esther, who passes it along to the king. This earns Mordecai credit in the royal records, and while it might seem like a small detail now, it will become incredibly important later in the story.
At the same time, we’re reminded just how impulsive and harsh King Xerxes can be. We’ve already seen his quick temper in how he dealt with Queen Vashti, and now we see it again in how he handles the conspirators. This impulsiveness will also play a big role in the story later on.
I think this passage teaches us something important about God’s timing and the way He works through seemingly small, everyday moments. Mordecai overhearing this plot might not have seemed like a huge deal at the time, but it sets the stage for something far bigger. Isn’t that often how life works? A conversation, an encounter, or even a simple act of faithfulness can end up being pivotal later on.
Romans 8:28 reminds us, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Notice it doesn’t say everything is good. Some things in life are hard, painful, or just plain confusing. But God can take even those moments and weave them into something good and beautiful.
Think about your own life. Have you ever had a moment that seemed insignificant or even frustrating at the time, only to look back and realize how God used it for good? Maybe it was a detour in your plans, a chance meeting with someone, or even a hard season that shaped you in ways you didn’t expect.
That’s what’s happening here in Esther. God is at work in every detail—through Esther, through Mordecai, and even through the impulsive actions of King Xerxes. It’s all coming together in a way that will ultimately reveal God’s faithfulness and provision for His people.
So, as we head into the weekend, let’s hold onto this truth: God is always working, even when we don’t see it. And the moments we think are small or unimportant might just be the building blocks of something much greater.
Thanks for spending this time together today. I hope you have a wonderful weekend, enjoy worship on Sunday, and spend some time with those you love. We’ll pick back up on Monday with Esther chapter 3. Take care and have a great weekend!
