Reflections with Andy – Kindness is Rewarded – Ruth 2: 4-23

We begin to see the power of kindness today. Boaz shows kindness to Ruth. Why? Well, first, he’s a good man. Second, he tells her that he and others have heard of the kindness that she has shown to her mother-in-law. Ruth has left her people and has taken refuge under the wings of the God of Israel. We see kindness begin to weave its way into so many tales of redemption. Kindness is always rewarded, for it brings goodness. It changes others, and it changes us.

Good morning! I hope you’re staying warm today, especially if you’re in Mississippi. I, for one, am ready for summer to return.

Today, as we continue through Ruth, we’ll focus on chapter 2, verses 4–23, which highlights the theme of kindness, a key element in this story. Let’s dive into it.

Boaz arrives at his field and notices Ruth, the Moabite gleaning there. He learns of her kindness to Naomi and extends his own kindness by ensuring her safety, allowing her to glean freely, and even instructing his workers to leave extra grain for her. Ruth is overwhelmed by his generosity and expresses her gratitude. At the meal, Boaz invites her to eat with the harvesters, further showing his care. Ruth then shares the leftover food and her gleanings with Naomi.

Naomi, upon hearing about Boaz, recognizes his kindness as an extension of God’s providence and calls him a “guardian-redeemer.” This sets the stage for God’s redemptive work through their lives.

This passage emphasizes kindness across all relationships. Ruth’s care for Naomi inspires Boaz to show generosity and protection to Ruth. Kindness is never wasted. Even when unnoticed by others, it reflects God’s love and draws us closer to Him.

Let’s choose kindness today. It has the power to change us and those around us. Thanks for joining me. Tomorrow, we’ll explore chapter 3 of Ruth. Have a wonderful day!
