Reflections with Andy – Not As Strong as We Think We Are – John 13: 36-38

Peter says he will go with Jesus even to lay down his life. Jesus says that will not happen; in fact, quite the opposite. Peter will deny Jesus three times! We’ll look at that story later in our readings, but today, consider this. Peter wasn’t being arrogant; I just think he thought he was stronger than he was. He was not as strong as he thought he was. We should aspire to be faithful, holy, and stand up for Jesus. But we should also understand that we are weak and frail. God understands this, and so should we. We should stand, yes. But we should stand with humility.

Good morning! I’m glad to be back with you all. I apologize for the missed “Rooted” sessions this week—I’d planned for one each day, but, as Robert Burns wrote, “The best-laid schemes of mice and men often go awry.” My doctoral classes have been demanding, and by the end of each day, I was simply out of steam.

Today, let’s continue with John 13:36-38, where Peter, in his eagerness, tells Jesus he’ll lay down his life for Him. Jesus responds with a prediction that Peter will deny Him three times before morning. It’s a profound moment that reveals both Peter’s sincerity and his human frailty. Often, our intentions are sincere, but like Peter, we sometimes fail to understand our limitations.

This story reminds us of the importance of humility and the necessity of grace in our walk with Christ. While we strive for holiness and aspire to live out our faith, it’s crucial to remember that God’s grace is what sustains us. Our journey is less about achieving perfection and more about growing through our imperfections. As Scripture reminds us, we are “just dust,” yet God knows our weaknesses and loves us regardless.

Today, let’s live faithfully and joyfully, anchored in the knowledge that we are held by God’s unending grace. Aspire to live faithfully, seek holiness, and know that our strength ultimately rests in Him. Have a blessed day, and I look forward to seeing you again on Monday!
