Reflections with Andy – Where Else Could We Go? – John 6: 60-71

Jesus’s teachings throughout John 6 are very challenging. He talks about eating His flesh and drinking His blood. He is laying out some very hard words for everyone to hear. Because of this, many disciples walk away. We spent some time unpacking who these people were today. Then we look at Peter’s answer to Jesus: where else could we go? Only Jesus has life, y’all. Only Jesus.

Good morning! It’s great to be with you today. I hope you made it through the hurricane safely if you’re in the Mississippi area. I imagine the storm might have caused some power outages, so I hope things are getting back to normal as quickly as possible.

Today, we’re wrapping up John chapter 6, covering verses 60-71. Yesterday, we talked about some challenging teachings from Jesus, and today’s passage shows the aftermath of those teachings. The disciples’ struggle is relatable when they say, “This teaching is difficult. Who can accept it?” It reminds us that following Jesus isn’t always easy—it requires a leap of faith, and sometimes that leap feels overwhelming.

Jesus is aware of their frustration and asks, “Does this offend you?” He understands the difficulty of His message but continues to emphasize that His words are Spirit and life. Some disciples turn away because they can’t handle it, but then we come to Peter’s response. I love how Peter, despite all his past blunders, gives such a profound answer here: “Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

Peter’s response cuts right to the core—when life is difficult, when faith is a struggle, when following Jesus seems too hard, where else could we go? There is no other source of life or truth. Only Jesus has the words of life.

It’s a powerful reminder to hold on to Jesus, even when it’s tough. We might not always understand everything, and faith might stretch us in ways that feel uncomfortable, but as Peter recognized, there is no better alternative. We’re not going to find life or fulfillment anywhere else—whether in the world, in politics, in legalism, or in empty pleasures. Only Jesus offers life.

So, as we face life’s challenges, whether it’s a literal storm or a personal struggle, remember Peter’s words. Hold tight to Jesus, for He alone can carry us through.

Keep the people affected by the hurricane in your prayers—those without power, first responders, linemen working to restore services, and anyone at risk. Let’s lift them up today. Tomorrow, we’ll dive into John chapter 7. Thanks for being here with me today. Be safe and take care!
