Reflections with Andy – Satisfied in Jesus – John 6: 1-15

We see the feeding of the Five Thousand today. A lot of really interesting things are in this text. Jesus turns to Andrew and Phillip again after turning to them early in ministry to find other disciples. Just because Jesus has used you once does not mean He is done with you. We see that with the feeding of the five thousand, they ate and were satisfied, but twelve baskets were left over. That is a very important number. Why? We’ll explain in our reflection.

Join us for our daily reflections with Andy. In 10 short minutes, he’ll dig a little deeper into Scripture and help you better understand God’s Word.

Good morning! I hope you’ve had a great week and are looking forward to a wonderful weekend. I sure am. No home football game tonight, so no grilling or French fries. Tomorrow, I’ll be heading to Hattiesburg for my daughter’s first home game of the season. Her band will be performing a halftime show about Jimmy Buffett, which should be fun. Southern Mississippi is playing Southeast Louisiana, and I’m confident we’ll pull off a win!

Today, we’re diving into John 6:1-15, where Jesus feeds the 5,000. Let’s take a moment to read the passage.

Jesus is always testing and teaching. In this passage, he asks Philip where to get food to feed the crowd, even though he already knew what he would do. Philip’s response highlights the impossibility from a human standpoint—six months’ wages wouldn’t be enough. Then Andrew finds a boy with five loaves and two fish, but he also sees the limitations.

What happens next is the miracle we all know. Jesus takes what little they have, blesses it, and it multiplies. Not only does everyone eat, but they also gather twelve baskets of leftovers. The number twelve is significant, symbolizing the twelve tribes of Israel and the apostles. It represents completeness, the fullness of God.

In Jesus, we find all we need, even when what we have seems inadequate. He satisfies us completely. Like the Rolling Stones sang, “I can’t get no satisfaction”—they were searching in the wrong places. Only Jesus truly satisfies.

I hope this passage reminds you that no matter what challenges you face or how little you feel you have, in Jesus, you have everything. Be satisfied in Him.

Have a great weekend! We’ll pick up on Monday with verse 16. See you then!
