Today is another passage we all know very well: God has shown us what He expected of us – to do mercy, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with our God. But what does that mean? What does that look like? What would it be like for us to live out the heart of this passage? This is a beautiful passage and a beautiful call for each of us!

Good morning! It’s a pleasure to be with you on this Thursday morning as we delve deeper into the book of Micah. Today, our focus is on Micah chapter 6, which is unique in that it contains two distinct sections. We’ll begin by exploring the first part, verses 1 through 8, where we encounter a familiar and profound verse that many of us know well: Micah 6:8.
Let’s read through these eight verses together and reflect on their significance. The passage begins with a dramatic scene, calling upon the mountains and hills to bear witness as the Lord presents his case against his people. The imagery of pleading before the mountains invokes the solemnity of a covenant ceremony, where the natural world serves as a witness to the agreements made between God and his people.
As the Lord presents his case, he reminds the Israelites of his faithfulness and the countless ways he has shown them love and mercy throughout their history. From their deliverance out of Egypt to their journey to the Promised Land, God has been with them every step of the way, guiding and protecting them.
However, despite God’s unwavering faithfulness, the people question what they can offer in return. They propose various offerings and sacrifices, seeking to appease God’s wrath and earn his favor. Yet, God makes it clear that he desires something much deeper than outward rituals or extravagant gifts.
In verse 8, we encounter the heart of God’s message: “He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?” These words encapsulate the essence of God’s expectations for his people.
Firstly, God calls us to act justly—to do what is right and uphold the principles of righteousness and fairness. This involves not only obeying the law but also caring for the vulnerable and marginalized in society.
Secondly, we are called to love mercy—to extend compassion and kindness to others, just as God has shown us mercy and loving-kindness. This goes beyond mere acts of charity; it involves embodying God’s redemptive love in our interactions with others.
Lastly, we are called to walk humbly with our God—to approach him with humility and reverence, recognizing our dependence on him and our need for his guidance and grace. This humility involves acknowledging our limitations and shortcomings, yet trusting in God’s unfailing love and faithfulness.
In essence, God desires authentic relationship and obedience from his people, rather than empty rituals or extravagant sacrifices. He wants us to live out the principles of justice, mercy, and humility in our daily lives, reflecting his character to the world around us.
As we reflect on these timeless truths, may we be inspired to live lives that honor God and embody his love and grace to those around us. Let’s strive to do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God each day, bearing witness to his goodness and faithfulness in all that we do.
Thank you for joining me in this exploration of Micah chapter 6. Tomorrow, we’ll continue our journey through the remainder of this chapter. Until then, may you have a blessed day, walking in the ways of the Lord.
