We begin 1 Timothy today, looking at 1:1-11. Paul warns against false teaching today, those who are using the Law wrong, not even aware of what the law is or what its purpose is. The Law was given in many ways to show us that we cannot keep it but that we need a savior. The Law shows us our inadequacies. Paul tells us today the purpose of divine instruction – love, coming from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and a sincere faith. That’s what we are aiming for.

Good morning. It’s a pleasure to be with you today as we embark on a new journey through the Bible, specifically the pastoral letters of Paul. Unlike Paul’s letters to specific churches, these were addressed to individuals—Timothy, Titus, and Philemon. In the upcoming weeks, we’ll explore 1st and 2nd Timothy, Titus, and Philemon. I particularly find Philemon intriguing and look forward to delving into these letters, which reveal Paul’s deep, almost fatherly affection for these individuals.
Today, we begin with 1 Timothy, reading through chapter 1, verses 1 to 11. Paul addresses Timothy, expressing grace, mercy, and peace from God. He emphasizes the importance of sound doctrine, steering clear of myths and endless speculations. Paul clarifies the purpose of the law, asserting that it was not meant for the innocent but for the lawless and disobedient. He highlights that the ultimate aim of instruction is love, stemming from a pure heart, good conscience, and sincere faith.
Paul addresses false teachings in Ephesus, emphasizing the constructive role of the law. It serves as a diagnostic tool, revealing our need for Christ. The law points to our inadequacy, leading us to Jesus. In verse 4, Paul warns against distractions like myths and endless genealogies, advocating for divine training known by faith.
The crux of Paul’s message is clear—the aim of instruction is to cultivate love, originating from a heart purified by faith, a conscience cleansed through forgiveness, and a faith that clings to Jesus. These are the markers of genuine Christian teaching.
In the hustle of our lives, let’s anchor ourselves in God’s Word, grounded in His ways and Spirit. As we order our lives according to His Word, we’ll witness a transformation—a heart purified, love flowing, and faith sincere.
Tomorrow, we’ll continue our exploration with 1 Timothy chapter 1, verse 12. Until then, have a wonderful day!
