Reflections with Andy – Pride Goeth Before the Fall – Proverbs 16

Today, in chapter 16, we see these wise words: pride goes before destruction. One of the greatest tools the devil has to attack us is pride. If we begin to think too much of ourselves, we begin to believe that we can’t fall or fail; it is then that the devil will have us, and it is then that we will get ourselves in real trouble. Stay humble. Understand who we are and whose we are. Stay rooted in Jesus, don’t get cocky or arrogant. Pride will destroy us. Don’t let it into your heart or into your head.

Good morning. It’s a pleasure to be with you as we continue our journey through Proverbs today, focusing on January 16th and exploring chapter 16. Today’s passage contains some profound insights, and I’d like to begin by highlighting verse 31, which I consider among the most significant verses in the Bible, next to John 3:16. “Gray hair is a crown of glory. It is gained in a righteous life.” There’s a timeless truth in this verse that merits reflection, emphasizing the honor associated with a life lived righteously, symbolized by the crown of gray hair.

Moving forward, Proverbs 16 features several well-known passages that resonate with wisdom. Notably, verse 18 cautions against pride, stating, “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before the fall.” This universal message echoes through history, reminding us of the danger inherent in unchecked pride. As we navigate life, applause can be as perilous as criticism, leading us to read our own press clippings and overestimate our strength.

In verse 25, we encounter the reminder that sometimes a seemingly right way can lead to destruction, urging us to exercise caution and discernment. The interplay between human planning and divine guidance is highlighted in verses 2 and 9, emphasizing the importance of seeking the Lord’s direction.

The theme of pride emerges as a recurring caution throughout Proverbs, mirroring the universal truth found in various stories and cultures. It’s crucial to guard against arrogance, recognizing that our humility is a shield against the pitfalls of pride. Surrounding ourselves with wise counsel becomes imperative, as these individuals serve as a bulwark against both undue praise and unwarranted criticism.

Tim Keller’s wisdom, “Don’t let the criticism go to your heart, and don’t let the praise go to your head,” encapsulates a balanced approach. Maintaining humility requires intentional effort, grounded in Scripture, prayer, and fellowship. As we navigate life’s journey, staying humble and cautious will safeguard us against the destructive force of pride.

In conclusion, let’s be mindful of our steps, acknowledging the potential dangers of pride. By staying grounded, seeking divine guidance, and surrounding ourselves with wise companions, we can navigate life’s challenges with humility. Thank you for joining me today, and I look forward to continuing our exploration of Proverbs in tomorrow’s discussion on chapter 17. Have a great day!
