In Proverbs 8 today, we hear wisdom speak. This is an interesting passage because it comes from the perspective of wisdom. Wisdom tells us today about how to gain it, where it came from, and what a gift it is. Wisdom is seeing things through the light of eternity. We need to learn to humble ourselves, not react, but to see things through God’s lens. We are driven by this cultural moment to react to everything. Wisdom tells us not to do that. Humble yourself, and see things through the light of eternity. That is wisdom.

Good morning! It’s wonderful to continue our journey through Proverbs together. I hope you had a great weekend. Today, we’re diving into Proverbs Chapter 8, which provides an interesting perspective as it seems to be spoken from the viewpoint of wisdom itself.
The first section, verses 13-14, highlights the qualities of wisdom:
“The fear of the Lord is the hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance are the way of evil, and perverted speech I hate. I have good advice and sound wisdom; I have insight, I have strength.”
This passage underscores the importance of fearing the Lord, which involves turning away from evil, pride, arrogance, and perverted speech. Wisdom is depicted as possessing good advice, sound wisdom, insight, and strength. It implies that wisdom is not just a set of principles but a dynamic force that engages with and influences our lives.
The second section, verses 22-36, delves into the role of wisdom in creation:
“The Lord created me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of old. Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth… When he marked out the foundations of the earth, then I was beside him, like a master workman, and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always.”
Here, wisdom is personified as having been created by the Lord at the beginning of His work. The language suggests a close relationship between wisdom and the act of creation itself. It portrays wisdom as being present, rejoicing alongside God in the act of bringing forth the world.
Wisdom as a gift of the Spirit resonates well. The connection between wisdom and the Holy Spirit is profound. The Spirit enlivens our eyes, granting us the ability to see and understand things from an eternal perspective. It is the Spirit that imparts true wisdom, allowing us to navigate life with insight and understanding.
Humility as a prerequisite for receiving wisdom is crucial. Pride and wisdom are indeed incompatible. The humble heart is receptive to the wisdom that flows from the Spirit. It’s a beautiful reminder that wisdom is not just acquired knowledge but a gift we receive when we acknowledge our need for it.
The call to see everything from an eternal viewpoint is powerful. In the chaos and noise of the present moment, the wisdom of God provides a steady anchor. Slowing down, seeking humility, and asking for wisdom are transformative practices.
It is wise to take a break from reacting on social media. It calls to to reaction, but we need our eternal vison to see things properly, not just in light of this moment. It’s easy to get caught up in the instantaneous responses, but wisdom invites us to pause, reflect, and see things through the eyes of God.
May we embrace humility, seek the eternal perspective, and ask for the wisdom that comes from the Spirit. Have a blessed Monday, and as we look forward to our continued journey through Proverbs.
