Reflections with Andy – Remember Your Chains – Psalm 107

Today, we look at Psalm 107. This Psalm has a heading, “Thanksgiving for Deliverance from Many Troubles.” This Psalm looks at the many troubles that the people have gone through and how it was always God’s steadfast love that delivered them. It is important for us to remember what the Lord has brought us through. There’s an old Steven Curtis Chapman song – “Remember Your Chains,” that this Psalm reminded me of. When we remember where the Lord has brought us from, we can be thankful for where we are now. Be thankful for his steadfast love.

Good morning! Welcome to our week of Thanksgiving Psalms. It’s a joy to be with you as we explore some of our favorite Psalms of Thanksgiving. Yesterday, we delved into Psalm 100, a personal favorite of mine, celebrating the idea that we are the people of His pasture, the sheep of His pasture. Today, we’re turning our attention to Psalm 107, a bit longer but equally rich.

This Psalm is titled “Thanksgiving for Deliverance from Many Troubles.” It essentially retells the history of the people, emphasizing God’s steadfast love and deliverance. The structure of the Psalm has a repetitive pattern, highlighting the troubles faced, the cries to the Lord, God’s deliverance, and the call to thank Him for His steadfast love.

The Psalm touches on various aspects of the human experience—wandering in desert waste, hunger, darkness and gloom, rebellion, sickness due to sinful ways, and many more. Yet, in each situation, the recurring refrain stands out: “Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to all humankind.”

Psalm 107 serves as a reminder to remember our change, to reflect on the difficulties and struggles we’ve faced, and to be thankful for God’s steadfast love that endures forever. We don’t want to be held captive by our sufferings, mistakes, or failures; instead, we want to remember where we’ve come from and how the Lord has delivered us.

The Psalm echoes the truth that we’ve all been through tough times, enduring various forms of illness, pain, hurt, and loss. But in all these, we can rejoice, knowing that the Lord’s steadfast love has always been with us. His love never leaves nor forsakes us, and it is steadfast—consistent, unshaken, unquenchable, unmovable, and unshakable.

As we journey through this week of Thanksgiving, take a moment to look back on what the Lord has brought you through. Remember your chains, the struggles, the trials, and thank God for His steadfast love that remains unwavering.

May you find gratitude in reflecting on the deliverance God has provided in the midst of life’s challenges. Have a wonderful day, and we’ll continue exploring more Psalms of Thanksgiving tomorrow. Thanks for joining us!
