Reflections with Andy – All Hallow’s Eve – Hebrew 12: 1-3

Today is Halloween. Do you know the religious history of this day? A lot has happened throughout church history, from Martin Luther to the celebration of our saints and those who have passed into the Church Triumphant. After all, we are surrounded by a mighty cloud of witnesses! So, while we may not think about it, today has some deep religious meaning!

Join us for our daily reflections with Andy. In 10 short minutes, he’ll dig a little deeper into Scripture and help you better understand God’s Word.

Good morning! It’s actually Monday morning, but I record these videos a day early, so you’re watching this on Tuesday morning. I wanted to let you know that there won’t be a video on Wednesday because I’ll be having a small outpatient procedure. Your prayers for me would be greatly appreciated.

Today, on October 31st, I’d like to talk about the religious significance of this day. First, we remember Martin Luther and his famous 95 Theses, which he nailed to the door of a church in Wittenberg, Germany, on this day in 1517. This event marked the beginning of the Protestant Reformation, and it’s where many Protestant traditions find their roots.

In contrast to this historical event, you might be more familiar with October 31st as Halloween. But Halloween, or All Hallows’ Eve, has religious origins as well. It precedes All Saints’ Day, which falls on November 1st. All Saints’ Day is a time to remember and celebrate the lives of saints who have passed away, especially those who have joined the “church triumphant” in the past year.

The concept of a “cloud of witnesses” surrounding us can be found in Hebrews 11 and 12. Hebrews 11 is often referred to as the “Hall of Faith,” listing various biblical figures who demonstrated great faith. In Hebrews 12:1-2, we’re reminded that we’re surrounded by this “cloud of witnesses.” This biblical idea connects those of us on Earth (the “church militant”) with those in eternity (the “church triumphant”).

As we celebrate All Saints’ Day, we don’t grieve for those who have entered glory because they’ve received their reward. Instead, we grieve for ourselves, as our lives are a bit emptier without them. But through the communion of saints and the words of scripture, we understand that while we’re apart in this moment, we’re eternally connected to Christ and will join them in His kingdom.

So today, as we remember our religious heritage and the origins of this day, let’s cherish the beauty of the church, rooted entirely in Jesus Christ.

Thank you for joining me, and although we won’t have a video tomorrow, we’ll continue our discussion in the following days. Have a great day, and see you soon.
