It is ironic, or perhaps the movement of the Holy Spirit, that in the midst of all that is happening at St. Matthew’s and in many other churches, our reading today (which was scheduled, not one that I picked) is Paul and Barnabas. They loved each other. But they separate today. After all they had gone through, after all that has happened, they are driven by a different vision. One for the mission, one for the relationship. Who was right? Which side was right? What do we hope for and cling to in the midst of disagreement, especially when the disagreement is sharp? There is much we can learn in this passage this morning.
There will be disagreements. There will be sharp disagreements. There will be pain and tears. Lord knows we’ve all felt them. But in the middle of disagreements, even sharp ones, we can still love each other and even honor each other as Christians.
