As I’ve mentioned to you before, when my reflections become rooted within my own personal devotional times each day, we will spend a fair amount of time in the Psalms, because the Psalms always speak to me in a powerful way. Today we look at some of the words of Psalm 37:
1 Do not fret because of the wicked;
do not be envious of wrongdoers,
2 for they will soon fade like the grass,
and wither like the green herb.
3 Trust in the Lord, and do good;
so you will live in the land, and enjoy security.
4 Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.
7 Be still before the Lord, and wait patiently for him;
do not fret over those who prosper in their way,
over those who carry out evil devices.
8 Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath.
Do not fret—it leads only to evil.
9 For the wicked shall be cut off,
but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land.
This is a Psalm that encourages us to wait before the Lord. It is a Psalm of patience. We are to wait before the Lord, and in that waiting, we hear God, we are renewed, we are refreshed, we head God and we experience God.
But part of our problem today is that we a so busy, we don’t give ourselves that space to wait upon the Lord. And when we do not do that, we find up at verse 8, we have anger, we have wrath and we fret. We need to give ourselves that space to wait.
But today, we are too busy. And by busy, I don’t just mean busy of action. But I mean busy of mind. Busy of soul. Our lives are filled with distractions. Distractions of social media. Distractions of news. Of to-do lists. Of so many things. These things, in and of themselves, are not bad. But, they fill our minds, they fill our souls with so much that never truly have time to just be still before God mentally or spiritually and just listen. Just listen.
That’s what I did in my recent trip. I didn’t really “do” anything. I drove. I looked. I took pictures. But I gave myself space of mind and of soul to listen. To be still. To hear. And while I didn’t hear any type of divine command from heaven coming down, I was refreshed. Because I had space to listen.
Today, I don’t know how busy your schedule is. But I know that so many of ours mind and souls never rest. So, we are full of that fretting that leads only to evil. Today, be still. Today, don’t be too busy. Today, give yourself space, even if just for five minutes, to turn off all the distractions and give God that space to speak.
He will. And we will be renewed through it. Today, don’t be too busy. Listen. And you will hear.
