February 20, 2023 – Deuteronomy 6:10-15 – Who Did It?

Today we’ll look at Deuteronomy 6:10-15:

10 “When the Lord your God has brought you into the land that he swore to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you—a land with fine, large cities that you did not build, 11 houses filled with all sorts of goods that you did not fill, hewn cisterns that you did not hew, vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant—and when you have eaten your fill, 12 take care that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 13 The Lord your God you shall fear, him you shall serve, and by his name alone you shall swear. 14 Do not follow other gods, any of the gods of the peoples who are all around you, 15 because the Lord your God, who is present with you, is a jealous God. The anger of the Lord your God would be kindled against you and he would destroy you from the face of the earth.

Today’s passage is one that is a great reminder to us all.  In our reading, the people are getting ready to go into the promised land.  They will soon take possession of this “land of milk and honey.”  After wondering for decades, they will soon have a home.

And so they have this reminder.  This entire chapter is a great reminder.  But what I love, especially the reminder you are going to, very soon, have a lot of good things.  You are going to have homes, vineyards, and many great things.

Who did this?  God did this.  You didn’t get these because of your goodness or your perfection. You are getting these blessings not because of your goodness but because of God’s goodness.

As you receive these blessings, remember who did it. God. God did it.

That is such a great reminder for us to remember in our lives. When we receive blessings and goodness, who did it?

Well, I did, right? That is what we want to say.  I worked hard.  I did my part.  I did it!

Well, who gave me good health to work?  Who gave me a family who supported me.  Who gave me opportunities?  Who has given me the gift of a work ethic?

God did. Yes, we had to do our part, but God did it.  That’s a great reminder in life.  To always remember who did it.  God did.  God deserves praise for all the blessings in our lives.  That is what the people needed to understand as they entered the promised land. Who did it?

God did it.

As the doxology says –

Praise God from whom all blessings flow
Praise Him, all creatures here below
Praise Him above the Heavenly host
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost
Amen

May that be our prayer.
