The Armor of God – Shield of Faith

We’ll be looking at the Armor of God over the next few days. You can read about them in  Ephesians 6: 10-20:

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power; 11 put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil, 12 for our struggle is not against blood and flesh but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on the evil day and, having prevailed against everything, to stand firm. 14 Stand, therefore, and belt your waist with truth and put on the breastplate of righteousness 15 and lace up your sandals in preparation for the gospel of peace. 16 With all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints. 19 Pray also for me, so that when I speak a message may be given to me to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel,20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it boldly, as I must speak.

Today we talk about a part of the armor of God that probably makes the most sense to us – the shield of faith. We all know what a shield is, right?  Every one of us who has watched Captain America and passed a trash can has used a shield, even in pretend, at some point.

That’s what faith is for us.  It is our shield.  It is what protects us. It is our greatest protection against the slings, the arrows, the flaming darts, and the attacks of the devil.  It is our faith that protects us, that helps us, that sustains us.

It is our faith that truly helps us stand against the attacks of the devil.  A shield blocks, defects, and even absorbs the attacks of the enemy. Our faith does the same.

If you are under attack by temptation, it is your faith that gives you the strength to stand.

If you are under attack with accusation (you are not good enough!), it is faith that gives you the strength to believe.

If you are under attack with doubt or stress or pressure, or anything else, it is your faith in Jesus that truly gives you legs, wings, and the ability to withstand anything that the devil throws at you. So, when you are under any kind of attack, cling to your faith.  When you are hurting, afraid, whatever spiritual battle you may be facing, cling to your faith.

We are saved by grace through faith, faith in Jesus, faith in His life, his power, and His all in all.  We lean into our faith. We lean into our savior.  We lean into what we believe to be true.  In our faith, we find our protection from evil.

When all else fails, cling to faith. It will never fail you.
