I’m doing my morning reflections on some of your favorite verses. Today we are going to look at Psalm 46:10. But we’ll read the entire Psalm to give us context. To understand more about how I try to read the bible, click on yesterday’s reflection.
If you have a favorite verse or a verse you’ve wondered about, email me back or send me a message!
Today we will look at Psalm 46:10, but let’s read the entire Psalm:
1 God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change,
though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble with its tumult. Selah
4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy habitation of the Most High.
5 God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved;
God will help it when the morning dawns.
6 The nations are in an uproar; the kingdoms totter;
he utters his voice; the earth melts.
7 The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah
8 Come, behold the works of the Lord;
see what desolations he has brought on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the shields with fire.
10 “Be still, and know that I am God!
I am exalted among the nations;
I am exalted in the earth.”
11 The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah
This is a Psalm written as a prayer in the midst of upheaval. Everything is in chaos. Nothing seems firm, everything seems murky, nothing seems right. The Psalmist sees that everything is upended, that everything seems to be completely falling apart.
Something we wouldn’t know anything huh?
So, as we see, this Psalm is relevant for us today. So, what do we see?
We should not fear, though the earth should change. Though the mountains fall. Though the nations are in an uproar. Though they toter. Though everything seems on razor’s edge.
Why? Because the Lord of Host is with us. That is true. Scripture is full of passages that remind us that God is with us. We have so much evidence that God is with us, no matter what happens. We KNOW that to be true.
But, here is what that passage teaches us. We must be still to realize it. There are so many things that distract, that pull, that pull us away. We need to be still. To listen. To breath. To understand. We need the grace to focus, to open our eyes, and to truly feel His presence.
God is with us. We need to be still to realize it.
One of the prayers that I have begun to pray frequently is this. God, we do not ask you to be present, because we know that you are here. We ask that we may see you, may feel you, may know you.
God is here, no matter how chaotic it may look or feel right now. He is. We can trust in that. We do not need to be afraid or worried. He is with us. May we be still to know that, to sense that, to experience it. He is here. May we be still and truly know.
