May 13, 2022 – Psalm 51 – Forgiven People

Today’s Psalm is one of the great Psalms of the faith, Psalm 51.  There is so much we could look at, but let’s focus on verses 10-13 today:

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and put a new and right spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me away from your presence,
and do not take your holy spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and sustain in me a willing spirit.
13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
and sinners will return to you.

Like I said above, there are so many great things in this Psalm, but I was stuck today about what David says here (by the way, David wrote this Psalm after his sin with Bathsheba).  David has seen his sin; he understands it.  He desires God’s forgiveness and grace.  He desires God’s salvation, restoration, and new life.

He said restore to me my joy; do not cast me out; create in me a new and right spirit.

And what will he do?  He will teach others God’s way.  He will point others to God’s goodness.  He will shout God’s grace.

Those who have received grace will tell others about grace. Those who have been forgiven will tell others about forgiveness. Those who have been restored will tell others about God’s restoration.

Forgiven people forgive people.

That’s at the heart of who we are as Christians. We have been forgiven. We should forgive others.

Forgiven people forgive people.  That is what David desires today.  That should be our desire today as well.  As we have seen and tasted God’s forgiveness today, we should tell others about that forgiveness.  We should show others how to forgive. And we should forgive.

That was David’s desire. It should be ours as well.
