April 29, 2022 – Philemon 1: 1-7 – Sharing Your Faith

Today we’ll continue looking at Paul’s pastoral letters by looking at Philemon 1: 1-7:

1 Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother

To Philemon our dear friend and co-worker, 2 to Apphia our sister, to Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house:

3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

4 When I remember you in my prayers, I always thank my God 5 because I hear of your love for all the saints and your faith toward the Lord Jesus. 6 I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective when you perceive all the good that we may do for Christ. 7 I have indeed received much joy and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, my brother.

Philemon has always been a favorite book of mine, among Paul’s letters. It is a short letter, only one chapter. We are breaking it up into two sections so that we can better look at the whole of it.  This letter actually touches upon slavery in Paul’s day, and we’ll talk more about that next week.

But I wanted to talk about why this is a favorite of my letters, and that’s verse 6. We are told that the sharing of our faith will become effective when we understand what all we can do.  I love that concept. We are not powerless, we are able to effect people and make changes in other’s lives and in the world.

When we understand exactly what it is that we can do, when we understand the difference we can make for the kingdom, then we are able to and willing to, make a difference for the kingdom of God. Think about that. Today, in this moment, you can make a huge difference for the kingdom of God.

Lives can be changed by what you do, today. In this moment, in this day, you can do great, great things.  You are not powerless, but through the power of the Gospel, you are able to do great things for Jesus, today.

Do you believe that?  Do you really? Do you really believe that today, in this moment, you can make that difference?

When we understand that, then we want to share that.

Do you believe that you can make a difference today? When you do, when you believe that, then you will want to share that faith.  Today, let’s be faithful with the great task that our Lord has given us!
