Today we are reading from Mark 3: 7-12:
7 Jesus departed with his disciples to the sea, and a great multitude from Galilee followed him; 8 hearing all that he was doing, they came to him in great numbers from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, beyond the Jordan, and the region around Tyre and Sidon. 9 He told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, so that they would not crush him; 10 for he had cured many, so that all who had diseases pressed upon him to touch him. 11 Whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and shouted, “You are the Son of God!” 12 But he sternly ordered them not to make him known.
There’s an old chorus that I love, that I was reminded of when I read this passage. You probably know it, it goes like this:
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus; there’s just something about that name.
Master, Savior, Jesus, like the fragrance after the rain;
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, let all Heaven and earth proclaim
Kings and kingdoms will all pass away,
But there’s something about that name.
Kings and kingdoms will all pass away,
But there’s something about that name.
Look at how folks flocked to Jesus today. They came from all sides to see Him. To hear Him. To encounter Him. The word I can think of is attractive. Jesus attracted people. People were drawn to Him like a moth to the flame. There was something about Jesus that the folks desired to be near Him and experience Him.
So, today, two questions for you to think about, throughout your day.
First, are you desiring that relationship with Jesus? Are you desiring to commune with Jesus? Walk with Him? Talk with Him? Spend time with Him? Are you attracted to Jesus? The Bible says that He will draw all persons to Himself. Today, are you drawn to Him?
Second, are you living in such a way that folks are attracted to Jesus through you? Does Jesus shine through? Does His light, shine through you? Do folks want to know your Savior because of His grace that they encounter through you?
There is something about the name of Jesus. May we be drawn to Him and may others be drawn to Him through us.

Andy, thank you for this entry. My question for you is this, why do we think Jesus sternly ordered them not to make him known?
I think because he knew that his fame would spread and the people would try to make him an earthly king. They were expecting a political messiah, not a heavenly king.
