October 14, 2021 – Mark 1: 29-34 – Serve

Today we are reading from Mark 1: 29-34:

29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30 Now Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once. 31 He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them.

32 That evening, at sunset, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. 33 And the whole city was gathered around the door. 34 And he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.

Today we see Jesus continue His ministry but at the beginning of our passage, we see the effect of what Jesus does to you. It causes you to serve.  Look at Peter’s mother-in-law today. She is ill, has a fever.  Jesus heals her, He restores her to health.

What did she at once?  She began to serve them.  Once Jesus has had His effect on her, she begins to serve others. That is one of the marks of those who have been effect by Jesus. That is one of the signs that someone has been healed by Jesus. They serve others.

That is what disciples do. They serve their Lord and they serve one another.  We see Jesus serve so many today in the end of the passage as He continues to heal and restores lives.  He loves His Father and He serves the world.  Jesus is a servant.

And He has called us to be servants as well. He calls us to follow His path or service, He calls us to follow His path of life, His path of faithfulness.  He tells us in the Gospels He came not to be served, but to serve.

Peter’s mother-in-law was healed by Jesus. At that point, she begins to serve.

This is an example for us.  If you have been healed by Jesus, forgiven by Jesus, restored by Jesus, saved by Jesus, today, that’s your call as well. Serve someone.  Serve your, spouse, your parents, your neighbors, your coworkers, all you meet today.

That is what Jesus does to us.  May we live out that call today.
