October 12, 2021 – Mark 1: 16-20 – Immediately

Today we are reading from Mark 1: 16-20:

16 As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” 18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19 As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20 Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.

One of the words that we hear quite often in Mark is the work immediately.  Normally this work is associate with Jesus.  He is always on the move, he is always focused on His mission. As you’ve heard me say several times, Mark gets right to the point. He jumps right into the action.

So, normally Jesus is immediately moving to what is next.  Today, we see immediate action. But it is not Jesus doing it.  It is Simeon (Peter) and Andrew; it is James and John.  Jesus calls them to follow Him. And what do they do? They immediately leave their nets to follow Him.  They leave it all to follow Him.

There are moments in life, many moments, that require great discernment. That requires waiting.  These are moments where we have to really and pray and make sure we are hearing God’s voice.  We all know those moments, we all have to think through those moments. Those moments can be challenging hard.

There are other moments where we know.  We just know what God is calling. We know what God is calling to us. We know the path before us. We know what we should do.

And in those moments, those moments where we just know – we should do what Simon, Andrew, James, and John did. Immediately, we should follow.  Immediately we should act.  Immediately we should be faithful.

Without delay, without pause, without hesitation.  Immediately we are faithful.

So, today, if you know what God is calling you, if you really, truly, deep in your heart know, act.  Follow.  Obey.  Immediately.  Let us be faithful, in that way!
