Today we are going to look at Mark 10: 13-16
13 People were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. 14 But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. 15 Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.” 16 And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.
Today we see some of Jesus’ continued teaching about what life should be like and be about, but it is not the position that one would take today, and it was most definitely not the position one would take in Jesus’ day. Jesus says that the kingdom of is for the little ones like the children in this passage.
We hear that passage today and go “Aw, aren’t the children sweet and cute and precious and aren’t we blessed to have them #blessed.” That is not the way that people in Jesus’ day understood children. Children were little more than property and one would be proud of having a bunch of children in the same way that one would have been proud of having a bunch of goats.
That is why the disciples are trying to get rid of them at first. There are important people coming though. Get rid of these kids! But Jesus says, no the kingdom belongs to ones like this.
What does that mean?
The kingdom belongs not the ones you may expect. The famous, the powerful, the one’s will all the means and all the resources. That’s who the world would give the kingdom to, that’s who gets the kingdom in this world.
For Jesus, though, it’s the simple. The humble. The small. The unnoticed.
The ones who know they really have no power; so their power comes from Jesus. The ones who find their worth in Jesus. The ones who find the life in Jesus.
If some other “thing” is your life, then Jesus cannot be your life. The kingdom belongs to the children, to the unimportant, the humble, because they know their life will never be found in this world.
So it must be found in Jesus.
The Kingdom belongs to the little children because only the little children want to truly find it.
Today, what are you are looking for. If you are seeking life in the world, you will never find it. If you understand that Jesus is the path to life, then you will find all that you need.
What are you looking for today?
