John 13.31-35 – The World in Front of the Text

Today we’re going to continue our look at John 13: 31-35.  Today we’re going to talk about what this passage means for the living of our life each day Jesus tells us that they will know where his disciples are how we love one another. I think one of the first things we need to think about regarding this is how we love each other as Christians. In this passage, he is talking to his disciples and in that in many ways talking to us as Christians. He’s telling us as Christians that how we love each other will be a reflection of our love for him.

I think this means for us as Christians that we have to live out a sense of love and unity with each other period when we keep reading from chapter 13 we eventually get to chapter 17 where Jesus prays this prayer that we will be one. One of the most powerful witnesses that we can give our world now is that we love each other. Remember love is not emotion. Love is not even agreeing with each other period love is simply valuing each other and seeking to serve each other with all that we are. Our world no longer values people with whom they disagree. For us as Christians one of our greatest examples is that we seek to love each other even in the midst of our disagreements. No other body in the world now seeks to live this out. Jesus commands us today that that is our very mission. That is how the world will know that we are his. That we love each other period Jesus is telling us that this love must first start within the body itself, and then it must move outward. We were told throughout the gospels that we were to love our enemies. But here is telling us specifically that we are to love each other.

Today, we can model that by loving and serving particularly within the household of God. So today, let’s love each other. Let’s seek to live out a life of unity and peace as much as we can, as Paul says, as much as you can, as much as depend upon you can live in peace with each other. Let’s say to live that out. I love you each today, not just in emotion, but in action. Let’s be there for each other.
