Hebrews 12: 1-3 – Rest

This week we are starting a series in worship here at St. Matthew’s entitled Running the Race.  We will be looking at Hebrews 12: 1-3 as our base text that we jump from as we consider different passages.  Today we are going to look at the world behind the text of this passage.

Today, here’s what I want you to do. Rest.  An essential part of any athlete’s routine is rest.  They need to take time to recover, to allow their body to heal, to be restored.

Rest is so important that God built a day of rest into the very days of creation. Rest mattered.  It matters for athletes.  And it matters for us in our faith.

So, today, rest.  Go for a walk.  Take a nap.  Listen to music you enjoy. Watch a ballgame. Unplug. Get off social media.  Getaway from all of this.  Rest.  Relax.  Listen.  Pray.  Rest.

Every athlete rests. So should we. Take, take this moment, right now. And just rest.

If you’d like to get each day’s daily scripture reading sent to your phone along with this reading guide, text @39110 to 81010 to sign up!
