Judges 2: 11-23 – Background

This week we are going to be looking at Judges 2: 11-23.  As you may remember, we’ve been using Hebrews 11 as our primary source these past few weeks, looking at each of the specific persons and stories mentioned within.  This week we are finishing up Hebrews 11, and that means we’ll finish up our Old Testament heroes, and we’ll finish up with Judges.

As we’ve done the last few weeks, let’s play catch up and get some background leading up to this point.  We talked last week about Rahab helping out the spies. What we see with Joshua was an incomplete conquest of the land. The people never fully possess the land. Joshua deals with the people beginning, but never fully finishing the conquest.

The book ends with Joshua having this powerful moment with the people where they renew the covenant.  Joshua tells them to choose God or choose the idols in front of them, but they can’t choose both. The people pledge to worship God and God alone. That is basically how Joshua ends. He dies.  And the people say that they are going to only worship God.

But, they fall into their old patterns, they fall into sin. That’s where we are at this point.  Tomorrow we’ll look specifically at what is happening in Judges at this moment.
