1 John 3: 11-24 – The World in Front of the Text, Part Two

Today we’ll be looking at the World in Front of the Text of 1 John 3: 11-24, specifically verses 18-24:

18 Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action. 19 And by this we will know that we are from the truth and will reassure our hearts before him 20 whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 21 Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have boldness before God; 22 and we receive from him whatever we ask, because we obey his commandments and do what pleases him. 23 And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. 24 All who obey his commandments abide in him, and he abides in them. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit that he has given us.

rootedchristToday’s passage has in it a verse that has in days past, and still, today saved my faith and saves my heart.  It is verse 20 – whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. That verse means so very much to me. There have been many times in my life where I have felt overwhelmed by guilt for actions that I committed.  As I have said to you many times, there are moments where we aren’t sure what is right and wrong and we choose wrong. But there are moments when we know what is right and wrong and we choose wrong.

Like most of us, I’ve done that a lot in my life. And there have been times in my life where I have felt wrecked by guilt over my sins. Times when I have really felt condemned because of my sin and my mistakes.  I’m not saying that guilt came from God, the devil knows how to push our buttons.  One of the buttons he can always push with me is guilt.  There have been so many days in my life where I have carried about my burden of guilt.

Then the Lord showed me this passage.  When our conscience condemns us, God is greater than that, He knows everything, and He forgives and loves us.  Finding this verse has given me such freedom from that point.  Whenever I feel condemned.  Whenever my heart tells me I’m unworthy or I’ve done too much or my sin is too great I remember. God knows everything. And He forgives me.

I’m forgiven.  You are forgiven.  Through Jesus, we are forgiven. Don’t stay condemned in your heart today.  You are forgiven, at this moment.  God is greater than all things, He knows all things, and He has forgiven us.
