Today’s reading is Psalm 127
Today’s reading reminds us that we are not the ones ultimately in control of everything. Unless the Lord builds it, the laborers labor in vain. We wake early, we go on, I love this line, “eating the bread of anxious toil,” we rise early, we do all this, and unless it is the Lord that is at work and is in charge, then we do it all for nothing. It is not up to us. We are not in charge. It is not, in the end, our call.
It is the Lord’s.
So, our chief purpose today is to seek God ahead of any certain task. For if we are “successful” but the Lord is not the one that is guiding the efforts, then we are not in the end successful. For our purpose is not the completion of any certain task, but the purpose is to know God, to love God, to follow God, and to love our neighbor with that we are.
Unless our efforts are directed to the Lord, then they are in vain.
