Today’s reading is 1 Corinthians 13: 8-13
We see today, in this last day, that all of the other gifts will end because they are not the goal. In end, in eternity, we are taken up into the complete and total presence of God. And what is God’s very nature? Love. The Godhead, the Father, Son, and Spirit are ultimately defined by the love that each person of the Trinity has for the other. In the end, in heaven, love will the defining mark.
That is why prophecies, tongues, and wisdom will cease. That is why faith, hope, and love remain, but the greatest is love. Love is the thing, the mark, the truth that remains beyond all else. So, if we nail all the rest, but don’t have love, we have not succeeded in the one place that matters the most.
We put away childish things and focus on mature things. What is the mature thing? Love.
Love remains. Love is the point. Love us the fruit. Love is the gift. Love is the definition. Love is it all.
Today, do we love. Not in an emotional way, but in a self-sacrificial way, in the way that Jesus loves. Today, that is the point and purpose of all our faith. Love, and love alone, remains.
