Today’s reading is 1 Kings 19: 1-10
The next few weeks, we are going to do something a little different. Over the course of this year, we are slowly reading through different keys passages of scripture (A Gospel, Acts, Romans, James, along with some Psalms). But these next few weeks, we are going to look at ten of my (Andy) favorite chapters in the Bible. This week we are going to look at 1 Kings 19 and Isaiah 53.
Today we read the first ten verses of 1 Kings 19. I love this chapter because, in this, we see Elijah right after he won a great battle for the Lord. He stands up strong and brave, he shows courage and is everything you’d want from a man of God. In this chapter we see Jezabelle tell him that she is going to get him, and he runs like a scared dog. That speaks to me so loudly, because we, or at least I, am like that so much. I do something right for God, stand up, faithful, and the next moment I blow it. I get it wrong, I mess up. I fail, I fall. I love, love. love Elijah, because he’s us. Sometimes he gets it right. Sometimes he gets it wrong. And God still uses him. His mistakes don’t discount God’s ability to use him.
In this passage, Elijah feels alone and afraid. But God doesn’t give up on him. Just like He will not for us, when we feel the same way. Keep walking, keep being faithful, even when you are unsure. God hasn’t given up you just yet!
