Which Road Will We Choose?

We live in a world that cries out for vengeance.  We live in a world that tells us not to trust our enemies.  To show no mercy.  To not be weak.  To be strong.  To never show weakness or softness.  That’s what we are taught by the world.

But what does scripture say?  What does Jesus tell us to do as His followers?  Listen to what we are told in Luke 6: 27-31:

27 ‘But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. 29If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. 30Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. 31Do to others as you would have them do to you.

Love your enemies.  Do good to those that hate you.  Bless those that curse you.  That is not natural.  Our natural response is to strike back.  To lash out.  To hurt those that hurt us.  To seek revenge.  To seek to pay back.  To see to bring harm.

That’s what we want to do.  That’s what we are told to do.  That’s the way of the world.

But that is not our way.  Our way to love, even our enemies.  Our way to do good, even to our enemies.  Our way to bless those that curse, to pray for those that abuse.  To give.  To love.  To pray.

And we can’t do this on our own.  We can’t do it on our own strength.  We can only do it through Jesus.  That’s the only way.

12392566173_723367a881_bI know it’s hard.  I know it’s unnatural.  I know we don’t want to do it.  I know we will be mocked and looked down upon and seen as weak.

But that is the only pathway to peace.  Forgiving.  Grace.  Mercy.  These things.  They are the only pathway to peace.

Which road will we choose today?  Will we do unto others as we think they deserve?  Or will do unto other as we would have them do unto us?

Today, which road will we choose?
