Walking Through 1 John: Day 4

Yesterday in our walk through 1 John we were told that if we walk with Jesus we will keep His commandments.  Today in 1 John 2: 7-11 we see what those commandments are:

7 Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment that you have had from the beginning; the old commandment is the word that you have heard. 8 Yet I am writing you a new commandment that is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. 9 Whoever says, “I am in the light,” while hating a brother or sister, is still in the darkness. 10 Whoever loves a brother or sister lives in the light, and in such a person there is no cause for stumbling. 11 But whoever hates another believer is in the darkness, walks in the darkness, and does not know the way to go, because the darkness has brought on blindness.

What we see here is that the old commandment that we are told to keep is the same commandment that we have been told to keep for many, many, years.  Love.

How can we say that we are in the light if we hate our brother or sister?   The love of Christ shines through us, and we have to love.  We really have no choice.

If you are in the light of Christ, if you have felt and experienced His love, His love will overflow from your heart and onto others.  You will love, it will just happen.  Just at the human body involuntarily breathes, so does the Christian heart involuntarily love.  It just happens.

Now, we have to attend to it.  We have to make sure that we are really loving.  We can’t let bitterness or hatred set in.  But as those loved by God, we must love others.

So, part of our job today is to make sure that we are walking in the light.  Love leads to light, and light leads to love.  They walk together.  Hatred leads to darkness, and darkness leads to hatred.

Today, how are we walking?  Are we walking in the light?  Are we feeding our souls with what is good, noble, and pure?  Or are we feeding our souls with that which is discouraging and tears down?

I’m not saying we have to be naive.

But I am saying we have to walk in the light.  We have to walk in love. That’s His commandment to us.  And as Christians, He is our Lord.

And we have to follow where He leads.

Today, may we keep His commandments.  May we walk in the light.  May we love.
