The main thing we have to do in our faith is this. Chase after Jesus. I’m going to say something a little counterintuitive. Your main task is not to avoid sin, it’s not to make sure you’re being a good person.
Your main task; my main task is this. Chase after Jesus. If you are chasing after Jesus, I truly believe that He’ll take care of the rest. He’ll lead you in the paths of righteousness and He’ll convict you of sin. Listen to what we are told in John 15: 1-5:
1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinegrower. 2 He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. 3 You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing.
Jesus tells us this. Apart from Him, we can do nothing.
Our holiness, our righteousness, none of this comes from us just “bowing up” and doing it. It doesn’t come from us “being a good person.” It doesn’t come from us, period.
It comes from Jesus. It comes from walking with Him. Being in Him. Growing in Him. Having Him change us, call us, clean us, make us.
Our ability to do anything at all, it comes from Him.
Our main job is to chase after Jesus. Chase after Jesus with all that we are. Seek to grow closer to Him. Seek to know Him. Walk day by day with Him. Because I just have to believe this. If we are walking with Jesus, He will lead us to thing that He wants us to do. He will guide and direct us. And as we are walking with Him, He will lead us to where we need to be.
And likewise, if we are doing something that we shouldn’t be doing, I have to believe that if we are walking with Him, the Holy Spirit will convict us of sin. The spirit will search us and point out to us where we need to grow.
As we walk with Jesus, these things happen.
And today, that’s our main job. He is the vine. We are the branches. We can do nothing apart from Him. Abide in Him. And as we do that; we find all that we are looking for.
