Wednesday of Holy Week

Today is Wednesday in Holy Week, often called either Holy Wednesday or more commonly, Silent Wednesday.  We don’t know much of about what happens today in today in the life of Jesus.  Today, though, is setting the scene for what is to come.  Today in many ways is about catching our breath, getting ready for what is to come.

Take time today to focus on the cross.  Look within, and remember why exactly it was that Jesus came, and what His purpose was.  Remember the necessity of the cross.

Just as this day is preparation for what is to come the rest of the week, take that time today to prepare yourself for what is coming.

One of the things we do know that happens, though is Judas agreeing to betray Jesus.  We see it told in Matthew 26: 14-15:

14 Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What will you give me if I betray him to you?” They paid him thirty pieces of silver. 16 And from that moment he began to look for an opportunity to betray him.

Why did Judas go to betray Jesus?  Luke gives us a deeper spiritual understanding in Luke 22: 3-4:

3 Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was one of the twelve; 4 he went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers of the temple police about how he might betray him to them.

giottoWe see in the midst of this the forces of evil at work, gathering around Jesus.

Do you see all that is happening here?  We have God’s plan for Jesus to be the atoning sacrifice for our sin.  We have Jesus, drinking from the cup that is His.  We see Satan entering into the scene to lead Judas, but we also have Judas choosing to give into temptation.

Today, there is in our lives that mixture of God’s plan and God’s leading, and our choices.  Each day, we have choices to make.  But we also know that God is at work in the midst of all our choices.

How does that work?  I have no idea.  I really don’t.  I know that Scripture teaches us that we have free will.  And I know that Scripture teaches us that God is working all things to good.  I am not sure how it all works.

I just know two things.  One – God is faithful.  God is good. God is at work.  Two – today, and each day, I have a choice.  Will I follow?  Will I be faithful?  Will I trust?

Today, on this Silent Wednesday, consider all that went into this moment.  The leading of God, as well as the choices made.  And today, be attentive to God’s spirit in your life.  And follow where it is that God is leading.
